Volunteers needed to help develop a genetic risk tool for degenerative eye disease

This study is inviting individuals over 50 years of age to participate in a Flinders Univeristy/Flinders Medical Centre based study investigating genetic risk for degenerative eye disease, including glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Glaucoma is a progressive condition that affects the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible vision loss if left untreated. The goal is to reduce the burden of glaucoma as the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the world. Furthermore, AMD is the most common cause of blindness in individuals over 65 years of age, and is a progressive condition affecting the retina that can lead to loss of central vision.

Genetic changes play an important role in the development of both conditions. The Research team have developed the ability to generate a genetic risk score predicting a person's likelihood of developing glaucoma and/or AMD. In a step to move toward implementation of genetic testing, they wish to assess the ability of this testing to identify those who are at high risk of developing glaucoma and/or AMD.

What participants are required to do

Participation would require a single blood or saliva sample. Individuals may then be invited to undergo a detailed eye examination which would take place around 12 months after providing the genetic sample. All genetic testing will be performed as part of the approved study titled "GRADE: Genetic Risk Assessment of Degenerative Eye Disease - A prospective assessment of polygenic risk scores to predict diagnosis of glaucoma and AMD."

The study will help other people at risk of developing glaucoma or AMD in the future.

Some participants will have a free eye examination that may provide information about eye health. Additionally, if we identify genetic results that are relevant and the participant has consented to receiving information about their sample, we can discuss the meaning of the results and arrange genetic counselling.

Participation is completely voluntary and decision to participate will not affect current or future health care in any way.
