The results of a study led by Centre member Dr Nicole McPherson has been published in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics
For this study, the outcomes of two common assisted reproductive technology techniques: in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), when used in women 35 years or older and where the male was fertile, were compared. 10 years of data was made available from Repromed.
After controlling for other potential influencing factors, use of IVF increased the chance of a live birth between 2 and 3 fold when compared with ICSI.
Impact statement: Routine IVF is recommended as the preferred assisted reproduction technique for older women and a fertile male, but randomised controlled trials are still required.
